Pillar 2 – Complexity and Continuity

Schools are complex ecosystems composed of students, educators, psychologists, support workers, families, and community partners. Currently, our neighborhoods are densifying at lightning speed, but school construction lags far behind. By the time new facilities open their doors, they are already at capacity. Portables have shifted from temporary band-aids to permanent fixtures, creating a "pressure cooker" environment adding increasing challenges.

Strengthening our School Ecosystem - The Puzzles Pieces
We must cohesively work together to take care of those who take care of our children. Building a solid school infrastructure builds a strong foundation for our children to learn and grow to become socially responsible citizens. It is important to create an environment where everyone is respected, supported, feel that they belong, and can thrive.

Overcrowding inside the classroom – The Emotional Toll & the SEL Solution
Overcrowding hurts individual student success. Bullying thrives when students feel isolated and systems are purely punitive. For many students, the constant roar of a packed hallway is a direct trigger for severe anxiety. We must push for proactive Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as the tool our kids need to navigate it.

Supporting Special Education and Staff Recruitment & Retention
SD43 needs a truly needs-based funding model, dedicated financial support for complex learning needs, mental health resources, and language supports.  We need to offer stable hours for our EA’s to afford to work and live in our community. Offering competitive packages to attract much needed specialist and offer the industry stipends will help to alleviate waiting list assessments and clean up the backlogs.

Students need stability to build trust. Our schools are more than just buildings, they are villages where we grow and learn together, a vibrant ecosystem where our children develop.
