Whole Child Safety – Designing Safe Routes and Inclusive Spaces

When we talk about school infrastructure, it is easy to focus entirely on concrete, steel, and budgets. But the true measure of a modern school district is how safely and inclusively that infrastructure serves the holistic, daily well-being of its students.

Actionable Steps:

As your school board trustee, I am fully committed to supporting the creation of:

 1. Creating Safe & Healthy Spaces

Dedicated sensory rooms and calm-down spaces.

Neurodiverse-friendly learning environments designed to reduce sensory overload.

Regulated spaces where every student feels safe, supported, and included.

Every child learns differently, and a modern classroom must reflect the diverse needs of our student population. Infrastructure planning must extend to the interior design as well as the outdoor space of our schools.

2.  Designing Safe Routes to School

I will champion integrated planning with municipal traffic engineers to systematically improve the perimeters around our schools.

This includes:

  • Implementing aggressive traffic calming measures in school zones.

  • Upgrading pedestrian walkways and improving crosswalk visibility.

  • Optimizing local school bus routes to reduce congestion and keep walking students safe.

A child's school day begins the moment they step off their front porch. True student safety requires us to look outside our property lines and work closely with our local Tri-Cities municipalities.

When the provincial government and municipal developers map out our cities, public education, student safety, and accessibility cannot be treated as an after-the-fact addition.

Our youth deserve the absolute best. Building complete, sustainable communities means securing their learning spaces, protecting their health, and guaranteeing their physical safety before the school desks fill up. As your school board trustee, I will bring an action-oriented, transparent voice to the table—one that isn't afraid to advocate aggressively to the province, collaborate deeply with our city councils, and put our students' safety and stability first.
